This volume, published in association with the Grimaldi Forum exhibition in Monte Carlo, profiles the work of 30 leading African artists including painters, photographers, sculptors and video artists whose works illustrate how intrinsically sub-Saharan African Art—with its own values, forms, and cultural history—has absorbed and transformed external influences. The artists featured include Seydou Keïta, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Malick Sidibé, Moke, Chéri Samba, Romuald Hazoumé and Bodys Isek Kingelez.
- André Magnin (1952, Vesoul - ) est français, commissaire d'exposition et galeriste d'art contemporain, passera une première enfance à Madagascar. Il participera en 1989 à l'exposition "Magiciens de la terre" réunissant des artistes venus des 5 continents à la Grande Halle de La Vilette et au Centre Pompidou. De 1989 à 2009 il constitue et dirige pour le milliardaire Jean Pigozzi The Pigozzi Collection à Genève. Cela lui donnera l'opportunité de parcourir en tous sens l'afrique sub-saharienne à la recherche de talents et d'être le commissaire de plusieurs expositions importantes d'artistes africains contemporains. Il fonde en 2009 avec Philippe Boutté la galerie Magnin-A qui joue un rôle significatif dans le développement du marché de l'art contemporain africain.
