A narrative of the author's travels to Lake Chad by way of the Benue river, with a return journey along the northern frontier of Nigeria to Kano, and down the railway to Lagos, to study ethnology, especially the movements of tribes caused by the desiccation of the country. Frederick William Hugh Migeod (1872-1952) natif du Kent servira à partir de 1900 dans le Colonial Civil Service, en Gold Coast (Ghana) jusqu'en 1919. Il effectue ensuite une série de voyages d'exploration au Lac Tchad, au Cameroun, en Sierra Leone puis en Afrique équatoriale. Il mènera également plusieures expéditions pour découvrir des œufs de dinosaures. Il publie plusieurs ouvrages relatant ses voyages ou traitant de questions linguistiques
