Susan Mullin Vogel est une américaine de Detroit qui passera sa jeunesse à Beyrouth comme à Porto-Rico. Etudes à l'Université de Georgetown puis s'installe avec son mari Jerry Vogel, à Abidjan. A son retour de Côte d'Ivoire elle travaille au musée d'art primitif de la fondation Rockfeller et passe un doctorat en histoire de l'art de l'université de New York. Fonde à New York en 1984 lre Center for African art qui deviendra l'Africa Center. Directrice de la Yale Art Gallery en 1994. Etudes de cinéma à l'université de New York puis réalise plusieurs documentaires.
