La bible pour une découverte du Sahara et du Sahel au XIXème siècle (l'édition française est abrégée de nombreux documents importants). Avec ses très nombreuses cartes itinéraires dépliantes en papier bible qui, avec les notes annexes sont une mine de renseignements irremplaçable pour le chercheur. Edition certes la meilleure mais aussi la plus coûteuse. Pour les budgets serrés on peut lui préférer l'édition américaine en 2 volumes moins illustrée mais au texte tout aussi complet (Ward, 1890).
